Swimmers from the City of Ely Amateur Swimming Club blew the competition out of the water at Newmarket Sprint Meet 2023, winning Top Team at the competition.

More than 50 Ely swimmers aged between nine and 18 travelled to Newmarket and District Swimming Club on July 2 for the competition, picking up a huge 95 medals on their way to victory.

The Ely swimmers accumulated more points from their races than any other teams, including Chatteris, March Marlins, West Suffolk Swim Club and Newmarket.

The team won 40 gold, 32 silver and 23 bronze medals with 109 personal best times competing in the 50m backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle, and a 100m individual medley race.

The swimmers chose the races they swam in, with some swimming in all the events.

The club's top five performers won all five of their races and shared the Top Boys/Girls award across the meet with other club swimmers who also got maximum points from their races.

The top performers or the girls were Peony Jackson, 9, Jorja Atkinson, 11, and Tia Hill, 16, and the top boy performers were Jacob Schultz, 11, and Cillian O'Brien, 15.

A spokesperson for the City of Ely Amateur Swimming Club said: "Everyone had a very successful meet...Congratulations to the whole team!"
