Cambridgeshire County Council has confirmed the date that works to turn the whole of Ely into a 20mph zone will begin.

The works to install the changes will begin on Monday, March 4 and are predicted to last for around four weeks.

There will be no road closures while work takes place, so disruption should be minimal, it has been confirmed.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council said: "These changes will help create a more accessible environment for everyone in Ely, with cleaner air and safer travel."

The City of Ely Council and Cambridgeshire County Council's decision to create a 20mph zone for Ely has been met with praise from many residents.

An Ely cyclist wrote to Cambridgeshire County Council to pledge their support for the scheme: "As a cyclist and pedestrian I have been subject to abuse from drivers.

"Speeding is prevalent on Lynn Road and along King's Avenue. The scheme has potential to make Ely safer and a more pleasant community and would benefit the environment, encouraging residents to adopt active sustainable travel."

However, there were some objections to the scheme.

One person said: "It is not necessary except outside a school.

"There are no accident black spots.

"There are very few roads in Ely where speeding can occur due to sheer weight of traffic or parked cars."

Another person also stated that lowering the speed limit to 20mph in the city will "put many people off of coming to Ely."
