The City of Ely Cricket Club's (CC) Women's team have become the first-ever Cambridgeshire Women's League Champions.

In the first year that the county hardball women's league has existed, Ely defeated Thriplow 2nd XV in the play-off final by six wickets.

The final was hosted at Sawston on Sunday, August 27, with a full team of female Umpires and Scorers.

Ely's bowlers were rampant and restricted Thrilplow to a low score, which helped set up the perfect platform to allow their batters to chase down the total.

Ely reached the final, having been crowned the victors of the North Cambridgeshire league, where they went undefeated.

Thriplow had also gone undefeated to win the South Cambridgeshire league, but a strong bowling performance from Ely in the final ensured only Ely's unbeaten record remained.

The Ely women's squad was established in 2019, and the team captain, Becky Case-Upton, who took four wickets in the final, said: "Huge progress has been made, with the squad playing in both Cambridgeshire softball and hardball leagues.

"Thriving Under 11 and 13 girls teams feed into the women's section and also play competitive matches.

"The women's squad caters for all, serving the local community.

"Some players are experienced, whereas others have only taken up cricket this year. They all come together and enjoy the game.

"There is a great team spirit, and it is clear that many local women and girls are keen to play cricket and want to develop their game in a supportive environment with professionally qualified coaches."

The City of Ely CC's women's team hopes that many more Cambridgeshire cricket clubs develop women's teams and that the progress and strength of the leagues continue to develop.

The City of Ely CC are always looking to welcome new players of all ages and levels of experience, and for more information, visit the club's website.
