A serious fire has burned through Indian Garden 2 restaurant in Fordham near Soham.

A photo from an eyewitness shows the flames coming from the windows of the restaurant earlier this morning (August 14).

The grade II listed restaurant used to be called The Crown public house.

40 firefighters are at the scene of the fire and have said the road is likely to be closed for some time, although the fire is now under control.

Fire officers have confirmed two people have been treated for smoke inhilation.

"The road is likely to remain closed for some time, due to the structural integrity of the building," a spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue said.

"For safety reasons, the chimneys will be removed from the building by a contractor shortly."

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: "The B1102 Church Street in Fordham is currently closed due to a fire at the Indian Garden restaurant.

"The road is closed between the Collins Hill/Isleham Road junction and Mill Lane.

"The road is likely to remain closed for some time and motorists are asked to find alternative routes."

Details still remain unclear, but emergency services were called to the incident in Church Street at around 6am this morning.

“An investigation into the cause of the fire will take place in due course,” a spokesperson from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

 “Please avoid the area, and keep windows and doors closed if you can smell smoke.” 

The fire service is urging parents to tell their children to stay away from the building once emergency services have left the scene as the possibility of harm cannot be ruled out.
