Overlooking 800 years of university history thanks to its stunning panoramic views and rooftop bar, Six is one of Cambridge's hidden treasures.

Tucked at the end of a winding street leading towards the river, away from the busy city centre, the restaurant and bar is located on the sixth floor of The Varsity Hotel & Spa.

When we arrive there’s a queue forming with dozens hoping to get a table for dinner, or a seat on the rooftop for cocktails in the sun - and it doesn’t take long to understand why Six is such a sought-after location.

With a stunning 360 degree view of Cambridge’s modern and historic architecture, the stunning view is the first thing that strikes us.

Easily one of the tallest buildings in Cambridge, you can see the church spires and roofs of buildings for miles.

The restaurant’s interior is just as impressive: modern, stylish and luxurious thanks to its summery leather sofas and chairs, floor to ceiling windows and quirky artwork.

The staff are attentive and speedy but not overbearing, while the layout is spacious and relaxed.

Then there’s the food and drink itself; though it might cost more than your average meal, Six is the perfect venue for a special occasion and the menu offers up some tasty, faultlessly-presented delights.

While it’s not something you’d immediately combine, the minty pea hummus compliments the grilled chorizo, taking the edge off of the spice - an unusual but delicious starter. The salt and pepper squid with lime mayonnaise, meanwhile, is a melt in the mouth choice.

For desert the hazelnut chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and mascarpone is a good choice: crumbly and big enough for two, it’s best shared.

But it’s the main courses that really make Six shine: the lemon and rosemary roasted half chicken, served with watercress and tomato, and a side of sweet potato fries, is cooked perfectly; full of herby flavour, it just falls off the bone; the creamy butter sauce is a great accompaniment too.

Another fine choice is the Gloucester Old Spot crispy pork belly with apple sauce and buttered spinach; combined with the strong cinnamon taste of the apple sauce, it creates a real taste sensation...

But that’s not all Six has to offer. After our meal we head upstairs to the rooftop bar - with a Basil Grande’ cocktail in hand (a delicious mix of strawberries, raspberry liqueur, vodka, fresh basil and ground paper, shaken with cranberry juice, the sweet,

fruity flavours add up to the perfect drink).

With dozens of waiters and waitresses on hand, we’re quickly seated and enjoying the chilled-out surroundings before finding the terrace’s selfie spot.

Perfect for after work drinks, couples going on a first date or - particularly in Cambridge - a post-graduation celebration, if you’re looking for something special or want to impress, a trip to Six bar and roof terrace is essential.
