Following an appearance on ‘Loose Women’, television legend David Hasselhoff speaks to Ben Jolley about his new Ibiza-in-the-nineties musical, ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’, which comes to the Cambridge Corn Exchange tomorrow night...

What’s the idea behind your new musical?

“It’s a musical based on the music of the 80s and 90 around the beginning of Ibiza, in the vain of ‘Boogie Nights’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Mama Mia’ and ‘Rock of Ages’. Its highlights of that music and also the highlights of Ibiza – how it changed into all kinds of great music and how the dance scene became such a big deal. I want to build a franchise with it, like ‘Baywatch’, so I purposely said ‘no, no, no, no, we don’t want to go on the West End’.”

Why is it called ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life?’

“The story mainly is about a girl who falls in love with a boy (who’s a DJ) and the young boy basically saves a life and I’m a DJ and I save a life after she parties a little too hard one night. It’s not Les Mis, it’s definitely not Les Mis. It’s more along the lines of ‘Mamma Mia’ – come along, sing along, have some fun. Have a party and if you’re lucky, grab me at the stage door, get a selfie.

What should people expect to see from the show?

“A lot of dancing in the isles! It’s basically a show that turns into a bit of a pantomime, with yelling and screaming, hollering at the Hoff, jumping up and consuming vast quantities of a liquid that makes you very happy.

“There are 75-year-old ladies that don’t want to leave but I’m like ‘that’s it the show’s over, we don’t have any songs left!’ It’s a lot of fun and a great experience.”

What music are you in to at the moment?

“Well, gosh, I listen to a lot of music. I’m still one of those die hard rock and roll fans, but I also like Maroon 5, I listen to a lot of Lana Del Rey. I saw Ellie Goulding at Coachella and I’m now a great fan of hers. I usually get to give out an award at the EMA’s so that helps me keep up with a lot of the up-and-coming acts, but I’m still old school. I like weird, fun, crazy music –the kind that takes you on a bit of a trip. I love Lana Del Rey, I think she’s great and my girlfriend, she turned me on to Ed Sheeran. But I’m so busy doing what I’m doing, I’m like, ‘Relight My Fire’, what’s that?!”

Looking back, what advice would you give to your 20-year-old self?

“Life is not fair. You’ve got to realise that life doesn’t owe you anything. Life will not deal you a fair hand so you’ve got to go out and make the most of it. And you can. Without ‘Knight Rider’, I wouldn’t be where I’m at right now…”
