Fifteen teenage drama students at West Suffolk College will take on their most challenging roles yet in ‘Bent’, a “harrowing” play about the Holocaust.
The challenging play, which is normally performed by experienced actors and was first performed by Ian McKellan in 1979, is about the lives of Berlin’s gay community in the 1930s and their treatment at the hands of the Nazis.
The young male actors on the college’s performing arts course all say they have been “shocked” by what their research showed them:, having found that homosexuality is still illegal in 77 countries and punishable by death in 10.
Gary Willis, director of performance arts, said: “It’s a wonderful play and they are a good contrast. “The students have been very committed, excited and brave.
“The material is challenging and a lot of research was needed.”
“The play is powerful, quite horrendous and, at times, moving.”
