AS part of National Mills Weekend, Burwell Mill will be inviting visitors to share their reminiscences of the building at a special open afternoon on Sunday, May 12.
Ann Wise, the mill’s volunteer co-ordinator, said: “If you or someone in your family remembers Burwell Mill from the past, please come and share your memories with us, and bring along your favourite mill photos and memorabilia.
“Perhaps you visited Burwell Mill as a child, or your relatives knew the miller, or more recently you’ve been doing hands-on mill maintenance? Whatever your knowledge or involvement, we’d love to hear from you.”
Volunteers at the mill will be collecting stories, memories, experiences and anecdotes to create a short sound-slide.
During the afternoon, that runs from 2pm to 5pm, the mill will also be recruiting volunteers to take part in Burwell Mill’s Fresh Wind in Our Sails oral history programme, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The aim of the programme is to collect a social history of Burwell Mill, and archive and preserve it as a record for future generations.
Earlier this year the mill’s cap was removed as part of a £420,000 restoration project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Work on the mill, built in about 1820, is expected to be ongoing until spring next year, when it will be returned to full working condition.
