Favourite pieces, including Handel’s Water Music and Zadok the Priest, will feature alongside Vivaldi’s rousing Gloria. ELY Cathedral’s North Transept is one of the earliest surviving parts of the magnificent medieval building and dates back to 1080 but stone failure and masonry damage is causing serious cracking. To help fund the 180,000 needed for repairs, a superb programme of popular classical music has been put together to feature entitled A Summer Prom.

Favourite pieces, including Handel’s Water Music and Zadok the Priest, will feature alongside Vivaldi’s rousing Gloria. The cathedral’s renowned Boys Choir will be joined by the Girls Choir & The Selwyn Consort, and the East Anglia Chamber Orchestra will ensure that the uplifting sounds resonate through the great cathedral.

The cathedral’s director of music, Paul Trepte, said: “This is a lovely opportunity to hear the cathedral choirs join forces with Cambridge musicians to perform well-known choral works. Such music takes on an air of extra excitement when sung by these young yet highly trained voices.”

Tickets start at just 5 to make the concert accessible and those buying the top-priced tickets at 15 will be treated to a pre-concert drink in the beautiful gardens of the Bishop’s House.

“With popular pieces you might hear on Classic FM,” added Paul, “hearing them performed in such a fabulous setting will be an incomparable experience.”

INFO: The concert takes place on Saturday, June 11. Performance starts 7.30pm Tickets 15, 10 & 5 from the cathedral box office on 01353 660349 or online www.elycathedral.org
