The Cambridge Arts Theatre is welcoming what has been described as a ruthlessly accurate and painfully funny observation of suburbia comedy.

‘Abigail’s Party’ tells the story of a drinks party, hosted by Beverly and estate agent husband Laurence, which descends into chaos as she invites round her new neighbours.

On the guest list is Tony and Ange, along with nervous divorcee Sue, jittery about the bash her teenage daughter, Abigail, is throwing up the road.

Beverly, played by Sherlock actress Amanda Abbington, however, has stacked a plate of little cheesy-pineapple sticks and plied her guests with alcohol and cigarettes before things get out of hand.

The show became an instant classic when it first appeared as a BBC Play For Today in 1977, the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
