Visitors will be able to walk through our farmyard and see all the pigs – mainly Welsh sows with Large White boars and a few Saddlebacks, our Hereford cattle and bulls and see the free range laying hens and table birds. They will also be able to meet our Connemara mares with their foals.

HAVE you ever wanted to know about the daily routine on a working farm? Well now’s your chance.

The Thompson family are inviting members of the public to Fenrose Farm in Isleham on Sunday, June 12.

The annual event is part of the LEAF’s Open Farm Sunday and is a must for anyone interested in dicovering how farmers produce our food and care for the countryside.

The Thompson Family are inviting everyone to come and see what happens beyond the farm gate. Roseanna Thompson said: “This is our fifth year opening our farm gates to the public on Open Farm Sunday. We had more than 600 visitors last year. It is an opportunity to ask us (the farmers) questions about our life on the farm, how we look after our animals and take care of the countryside. It’s a great afternoon out for all the family and we look forward to meeting everyone.”

Visitors will be able to walk through our farmyard and see all the pigs – mainly Welsh sows with Large White boars and a few Saddlebacks, our Hereford cattle and bulls and see the free range laying hens and table birds. They will also be able to meet our Connemara mares with their foals.

“As they stroll around, added Roseanna, “we can show them all the different ages of pigs from the newly born to the finished pig, as well as the sows and boars. For a bit of fun people can take part in the ‘guessing the weight of the pig’ competition. As well as a display of modern day and vintage farm machinery to look at, our visitors can have a go in our Teleporter and see how fast they can place a ball in a bucket or on a cone.

From the farmyard two tractors and trailers will take them along the Isleham Washes and through our herd of Hereford cows and calves. Before they venture back to the farm for the barbecue (using produce from the farm) and home-made tea and cake, they can stop on the Wash and speak to a Natural England representative about the stewardship scheme the washes are in and have a go at pond dipping. We were very fortunate to have the Washes accepted for the DEFRA Environmental Scheme ‘HLS and ELS’.”

There will be lots of information available about farming for the children to take home and show their friends at school and leaflets and receipe booklets for mums and dads with ideas for using British pork and British beef. As well as being able to try our own produce from the barbecue, the farm shop will also be open.

Donations raised from the competitions and rides will be given to the East Anglian Air Ambulance and The Isleham Community Association there will be a duck race near the end of the day to raise funds for the New Community Centre project in Isleham.
