Ely Rotary Club is encouraging people to dress up in their best 1940s attire and share their memories of Battle of Britain Day for a big band concert next month.

The event, which is being held in commemoration of the day’s 75th anniversary, will take place on Saturday, September 5 from 7pm at Needhams Hall, Ely Community College.

The fancy dress theme hopes to see people adorning a range of military uniforms, civilian suits and waistcoats, tea dresses, fur stoles, headscarves, neckerchieves, handbags, hats and gloves appropriate to the area.

The club is also asking for people to come forward and share their memories of Battle of Britain Day.

Ely Rotary Club chairman Eric Grant said the event will create quite an atmosphere.

“We are hoping to have enough people in, so that in between Opus 17’s songs we can tell peoples’ stories from Battle of Britain Day.

“We have some lads coming from Basildon who have a great story about their dad who was on his way to work on that specific morning.”

“There will be the usual lights out at the start with an air raid warning, lots of Glen Miller songs and for the first time there will be a dance floor,” he added.

“This year we also have a bar which will sell beer and glasses of wine at around £2 each.”

Those who wish to retell their experience should contact event organiser Eric Grant on 01638 780827.

Tickets, which cost £14, are available from the above number, Burrows Bookshop, and Wade’s Opticians.
