A BATTLING Ely Tigers side came away from St Ives with two impressive wins at the weekend.

Match 1 - Ely under 9's (3) vs St Ives under 9's (0)

With two excellent try's from Tiger Jacob Dawes within minutes of the first whistle, gave Ely the boost they needed. Ely supported each other, driving well and looking for space at all times, continuing to prove difficult opposition for St Ives. Half time score 2-0 to Ely. The second half continued to go Ely's way despite some high tackles and St Ives managing to take the Ely squad into touch on some occasions, the Tigers battled well and were able to continue with their lead. Robert Armer taking Ely's second half try and St Ives not managing to get by the Tigers defence the final score ended with Ely winning 3-0

Match 2 - Ely under 9's (7) vs St Ives under 9's (0)

Ely continued with their winning success in the second match. With Robert Armer taking the first try followed by two spectacular try's from George Freeman after having one disallowed. The standard of play from the Ely team this week was fantastic, with great support play throughout the game from Megan Clowes, Tabitha Butler, Matthew Whitworth and Josh Smith. Matthew Melloy was able to take two further try's for the Ely side before halftime, one being an impressive run of the whole pitch. (5-0 to Ely) The second half started with Matthew Melloy taking his 3rd try of the game. St Ives showed great determination and continued to battle hard, Ely had to work hard to take their final try of the match from George Freeman, also taking his hat trick of the game. Final score 7-0 to Ely

The two matches for the under 9's proved to be exciting, showing their determination to take the ball over the line. Jim Burns - coach, described the two games as the best rugby he has seen the under 9's play, with their driving of the ball and support in team work. Their efforts had paid off with two great results. Man of the Match was awarded to George Freeman.
