ISLE of Ely Rowers Libby Milne and Nell Freeman, fended off stiff competition to take gold at the prestigious Ball Cup event at the weekend.

The event, held on the 2012 Olympic rowing course at Dorney Lake, in Eton, attracts some of the top young scullers in the country but the Ely pair held their nerve in a gripping final to take first ahead of close rivals Tideway.

Also racing on the day for Ely was Adam Hughes who was racing in the Junior 15 single sculls event. Hughes sauntered to victory in his heat and looked a strong bet for a medal placing as he lined up for the final.

Having worked so hard in his heat, Hughes found the final more demanding and in a closely contested race took third place, winning bronze.

Isle of Ely Rowing Club Coach Victor Bridges, said: "It's been an excellent day - we entered two crews and came away with two sets of medals. Today's event has given our juniors some very useful racing experience.
