Football is known for its quick tempo and frenetic pace, but a group of players from Witchford have shaken up the fundamentals of the sport by getting involved in ‘walking football’ sessions.

Walking football is a variation of the sport aimed at those with reduced mobility. It is often played by those over the age of 50, but is attracting younger players as it gains popularity in the UK and abroad.

The three-monthly sessions, held at Witchford Village College sports centre, have received a welcome funding boost in the form of support from local retailer, Paul Day’s Sports and Leisurewear.

Sponsorship means that the sessions can be put on for free, and Witchford Village College sports centre manager, Jamie Douglas, says he is delighted that the sessions can continue free of charge.

He said: “I approached Paul Day’s Sports at the beginning of the summer with the proposal and we were delighted when they agreed to sponsor the sessions.

“I know it’s clichéd but football is known as the people’s game and with such a great facility on our doorstep, it almost feels like a responsibility of ours to make sure everybody has the opportunity to use it.”

“The sessions have proved popular with the over 40s, 50s and 60s but we also have a few younger lads there too. We make sure the teams are mixed up and the matches are competitive but good-spirited.”

The most recent match took place on July 24, where two 8-a-side teams battled out an entertaining 2-2 draw over two halves of 32 minutes, with the age of players ranging from 23 to 63.

The next session takes place at Witchford Village College on Sunday August 28 at 10.30am. For more information, or to book a place, call 01353 646421 or email sportscentre@witchfordvc.co.uk. Participants must be over 16.
