Ely City 0 Littleport Town 2

THIS local derby, played under floodlights, proved to be a keenly-contested affair.

As the first half progressed, however, the two teams grew in confidence and opportunities for scoring began to materialise. Ely forwards put two shots wide, while Sean Monigatti saw his close-range header saved by the home keeper. Midway through the half, the deadlock was broken when Monigatti controlled a cross inside the area and fired the ball into the far corner of the net.

After the break, a disallowed goal, and then the post and bar, foiled Littleport's endeavours.

Littleport looked to strike on the break as Ely pushed players forward, and then minutes from time the result was decided when another cross from the right found Dan Bell running in at the near post and he volleyed the ball past the helpless home keeper.

Littleport: Rob Wilson, Chris Brown, Tom Evans, Adam Reckless, Matt Fuller, Nick Seaman, Luke Williams, Lee Fuller, James Elliott, Dan Bell, Sean Monigatti, Sam Males, Oli Pindar, Adam Ellertson, Ryan Middleton.

St Ives Rangers A 1 Ely City A 4

ELY travelled to St Ives with only 10 men due to recent injuries and holiday commitments.

Despite early pressure the breakthrough did not come until three minutes before half time. Chris Stewart battled to keep Rangers in their own penalty area until the ball broke to David Turnbull on the edge of the box to smash in a powerful effort, to be denied by an excellent parry from the St Ives keeper. The ball fell to Henry Carson to fire in the rebound. Two minutes later Ely extended their lead when Stewart threaded through a pass for David Turnbull to run onto and score from the edge of the area.

Two became three early in the second half when the tireless Stewart fired home. Rangers pulled a goal back when the ball looped over Simon Allen in the Ely goal.

A fine Ely performance was rounded off with Henry Carson notching his second goal midway through the half.

Soham Town Colts 2

Burwell Tigers 1

ONCE again Soham made hard work of winning a game which they should have won much more convincingly.

Town missed a hatful of chances and the Burwell keeper seemed to be a magnet for the ball, somehow preventing the Soham forwards from finishing the job.

About midway through the half, Town did break the deadlock. Elliot Drewery struck a fine shot from outside the box, leaving the Tigers' keeper rooted to the spot. Burwell battled away and one of their few forays into the Soham half led to a terrible mix-up in the Town defence. After a shot from distance rebounded off the post, a Burwell forward slotted the ball home.

The score remained level right into the last few minutes of the match. From yet another Town attack, Ryan Brook found himself through on goal with only the keeper to beat. Unfortunately for Burwell the keeper came out and picked the ball up outside his area, receiving a red card.

From the resulting free-kick, man of the match Simon Murfitt curled his well-struck shot right into the corner to secure the points for Town.

n Town's next match, against St Neots Town Colts, will be played at Julius Martin Lane on April 20, kick-off 7.30pm.

Ely Crusaders A 3

A CLOSE match played in very windy conditions which saw play move back and forth at great speed.

With minutes to go in the first half, a smooth Ely passing move saw Scott Callaghan pick up the ball on the touchline, swerve inside and unleash a shot which flew in the top corner.

The home team came out for the second half and immediately equalised. Ely went forward again from the restart, passing well to find Jack Rudkin in space in front of the goal to tap in Ely's second. Ely's final goal came when Rudkin received the ball in the centre circle. He set off on a solo run before letting loose an unstoppable shot which flew past the keeper.

The home team did not give up and bombarded the Ely goal with shots and were rewarded with a late goal.

Crusaders: Oscar Haines, Ryan Marston, Tom Matcham, Harry Beeton, Tyler Thurston, Scott Callaghan, Thomas Walker, Alex Cremer, Jack Rudkin.

Bluntisham Rangers B 1

Haddenham Rovers Colts A 4

HADDENHAM A re-captured last years passing form with a conclusive win away to Bluntisham Rovers B. It was Bluntisham who scored a breakaway goal, however, to start the scoring.

The second half started with a bang with Rovers John Falconer coming close on three occasions before top scorer Kieran Drummond drove the ball into the corner to make the score 1-1.

Haddenham took the lead with a well taken goal by Oliver Holden. Haddenham now took total control with Snooks hitting the post and clipping the bar before Alex Lowe capped another excellent personal performance scoring on the half volley at the back post from another Drummond cross. Drummond then added a stunning fourth goal with a thumping strike late on to seal a well deserved win.

Stretham 2

Haddenham Rovers B 2

THE benefit of training sessions being back on grass was readily apparent as Haddenham B had a great match with Stretham.

In a cracking first half Haddenham took the lead with some good play from Robert Nangle putting Tyrell Barrett through the Stretham defensive line, with Barrett slotting the ball past the keeper.

Further good play from Haddenham saw a great strike from Daniel Piggott put the visitors ahead 2-0. Nangle came close with a long range effort that hit the crossbar. It was not until late in the first half that a low cross was put away to reduce the gap to 2-1.

Stretham had much more of the possession in the second half, and Haddenham fought well to get the ball away from their penalty area. Some great tackling and clearances from Chris Threadgold in defence gave Haddenham the opportunity to break on a few occasions but Stretham finally earned a well deserved draw. Chris Threadgold was Haddenham's man of the match.

Newmarket 6

NEWMARKET started the brighter and their excellent play and passing led to three goals in the first few minutes. Then a free kick from the halfway line by Newmarket, swept over everyone and into the goal, then another attack and it was soon 5-0.

Soham continued to try and Kyle Allgood, with no space, made enough time to volley the ball over the keeper and into the net.

Newmarket replied straight away, but Soham kept their heads up with a good display by Matthew Fretwell in goal.

Their adventure paid off when Matthew Hewitt snatched a goal, followed by another for Jordan Turpin.

Soham man of the match was Matthew Fretwell.

Mepal Sports 5 Stretham 6

MEPAL'S unbeaten run came to an end against a resilient Stretham side who fought back from a five-goal deficit.

For Mepal, George Rayner was again in fine form, orchestrating much of the home side's attacking play and with 15 minutes gone Mepal were four goals to the good.

Rayner's hat-trick and a further Harrison Jones effort gave them a clear advantage. But after the interval the visitors rallied, clawing back the deficit.

Matters were evenly poised as the game entered its latter stages but Mepal got their noses in front again with Rayner's fourth and Jones's second.

Stretham were not to be denied, grabbing two goals for a hard-fought victory. Mepal: Dean Baxter, Kassem Lloyd, James Knox, Joshua Fenner, Shane Whatley, Joe-Joe Corlito, James Rayson, George Rayner, Harrison Jones, Thomas Smith, Ashley Howlett.

Mepal Sports 6 Chatteris 5

MEPAL recovered from the disappointment of Saturday's defeat with a slender victory over Chatteris. But they made hard work of matters having foregone a second consecutive five-goal advantage.

Aaron Shipley made his debut for Mepal and he made an immediate impact, turning in George Rayner's cross to open the scoring.

Goals followed for Harrison Jones, Rayner (two) and Kassem Lloyd.

But Chatteris fought back well and began to play some neat football, scoring five without reply.

With matters evenly poised it was left to Rayner to settle matters, his strike giving him another hat-trick and helping Mepal back to winning ways.

Mepal: Dean Baxter, Kassem Lloyd, James Knox, Joe-Joe Corlito, James Rayson, George Rayner, Harrison Jones, Thomas Smith, Aaron Shipley.
