WITCHAM'S recent woes with the bat continued at the weekend as they lost out by two wickets against Needingworth.

Put in to bat first, Witcham struggled for runs in the early stages as the top three batsmen fell for just 40 runs. A resilient middle order, bolstered by some excellent batting by Tyler Phillips (44), steadied the ship though and moved the visitors on to 166-8 after their 40 overs.

Despite having a little more than four runs an over to defend, Witcham's bowlers tested their opposition rigorously and some sterling work from Ian Housden in particular (4-22) gave the visitors some hope of victory.

Though they came within a whisker of victory after some inspired bowling, a lack of around 10 or 20 runs proved costly for Witcham as Needingworth's tail wagged to add a further 50 runs to the total and they guided the hosts home with just three balls to spare.
