ELY 3 scored their first ever victory over close rivals Witchford at the weekend as they powered to a 35-23 triumph.
Stout defence and disciplined shooting meant that the two sides were deadlocked for much of the game but it was Ely who ultimately made their chances pay as they pulled away in the third-quarter to take the game.
The first-half was a gruelling affair for both sides as the respective attacks were held at bay by robust defending. Ely's Jo Elkington, Naomi Mercer and Kathryn Buck in particular were instrumental in keeping the home side in the match.
After the break, Ely began to gain the upper hand over the visitors and accurate shooting from Rachel Starling and Anita Reidy allowed the home side to open a lead.
By the end of the third quarter, Ely had opened up a muscular seven goal lead and kept the momentum going into the final quarter, finishing up with a twelve goal lead.
ELY 2 bolstered their chances of promotion at the weekend as they picked up an impressive 42-40 win over league leaders M17.
Despite opening up a sizeable advantage going into the final period, Ely came under intense pressure from the visitors in the latter stages but held on for the win thanks to some resolute defending.
Being only one of two teams to have beaten M17 so far this season, Ely were keen to do the double and set about their task in earnest.
Janice Quarrier and Sally Shipley in particular impressed as time and again they scored to keep the home side in front
In the second-half M17 came out fighting and Ely had to keep their heads as the opposition narrowed the margin. The last quarter saw some desperate defending by Ely but a fighting team performance ensured that they held out for 42-40 victory.
