FA VASE FIFTH ROUND

Billingham Synthonia 4

A SECOND-half collapse in Teesside ended Mildenhall's FA Vase dream.

The Suffolk side made the 220-mile trip to Billingham, near Middlesbrough, for Saturday's match with key forward players Matty Clements and Neal Docking out injured and Liam Harrold, Coren Hardy, Lee Wilson, Ian Salt and Lawrence Church all cup-tied.

Graham Rush missed a golden opportunity to give Town an early lead when he placed a free header wide after a corner in the fifth minute and the visitors continued to control the early exchanges.

Ozie Foster was denied by a spectacular save in the 35th minute and the game remained goalless at half-time.

Billingham found themselves 2-0 up by the 56th minute with Tommy Marron and then Lee Flanagan scoring from close range after corners.

Mildenhall offered little response and the hosts increased their lead when the lively Colin Iley found space with a quick turn and set up David Wells to smash home a volley from 12 yards.

Simon Shaw completed a miserable afternoon for Mildenhall when he finished from the penalty spot after Iley had been fouled.

Mildenhall were knocked out of the FA Vase at the same stage as last season, which, at that point, was the furthest they had ever been in the competition.

Mildenhall boss Trevor Munns said: "Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and admit that your opponents were better than you, but I certainly think Matty Clements's pace and Neal Docking's strength would have been too much for them if they had been available.

"It's a bit frustrating because I think we could have beaten them on another day and it would have been good to go at least one stage better than last year.
