ELY Vikings picked up their first ever win in the Regional Korfball League with a 12-11 victory over Cambridge-based side Phoenix.

Phoenix, who play in a higher local league than Vikings, fielded a strong team but were unable to stop Vikings taking the lead early on. Solid possession play allowed Ely to stay on top and they managed to hold on to their advantage by the smallest of margins in the match which took place in Milton Keynes.

Loes Versteegh and Jon Smith topped the scoring for Vikings, with four goals each in the match. Olly Watts, Harriet Watts, Lia Matthews and Chris Brown all chipped in with a goal apiece to earn Vikings their maiden victory.

Vikings' juniors also won their first match in a tournament with other local Korfball teams Littleport Lions and Norwich Knights. Molly Butler scored the only goal as Vikings won 1-0 against Lions in their first match although Lions went on to win the tournament on goal difference.
