Soham Town Rangers 4 Waltham Forest 1

It may have been a poor performance but Soham still managed to extend their unbeaten run to 13 games with victory against Waltham.

Soham manager Steve Fallon admitted his players were perhaps complacent but added that the victory after such a poor display showed his side were doing well.

In the end early goals from Ben Sawyer and Jordan Gent and Chris Lindsay killed the game off before a late finish from Luke Stanley ensured their winning streak was extended to five games.

Sawyer’s opener after eight minutes was a rare spark of individual ingenuity in a largely forgettable match, cleverly twisting and turning his marker inside out before curling his shot into the far corner.

Buster Harradine then set up two goals in quick succession, Jordan Gent volleying in his corner in the 15th minute before Lindsay was on hand to tap in Harradine’s free kick two minutes later.

Unfortunately the goals killed the match off as a contest and Soham sat back comfortable in the knowledge their opponents had little to worry them.

There was at least some hope for Waltham when they scored three minutes into the second half, Leon Fisher given space to head past Ordonez.

Ordonez was taken off after Waltham striker Menga unintentionally kicked him in the head when chasing a through ball, leaving the Soham keeper with nasty wound.

Harradine was forced to don the gloves, but for a one save with his feet had little to do.

As tired legs began to falter under the muddy pitch, chances started to appear for both teams but sloppy finishing meant that the scored remained as it was until four minutes from time when Stanley nodded in Lindsay’s effort.

It was possibly not the most entertaining of matches and boss Fallon admitted his side will have to improve for their next league fixture against AFC Sudbury.

Fallon felt that poor execution let his side down. He said: “The final ball wasn’t good enough.”

Fallon also felt the muddy ground hindered his side saying: “The pitch was very heavy. There were some weary legs out there today; the pitch took it out of us.”

Some good news however for the Greens will be the return of play-maker Joey Abbs to the side in time for the Sudbury fixture.
