MORE than £100 was raised for charity when sailors took part in Ely Sailing Club's Jamie Butcher Memorial Trophy on Sunday.

The event was organised in remembrance of Jamie Butcher, who lost his life sailing in the English Channel in February.

A fleet of 18 competitors took part and a total of £120 was raised, which will be shared between Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation.

In the first of three races, Greg and Jordan Williams took an early lead but they soon lost it to Vincent Christan, in a Laser.

He steadily increased his lead to take line honours and on corrected time beat Alex Tory by four minutes. This relegated Gerald and Nicholas Copsey, who took third place by 45 seconds.

Vincent Christan took line honours in the second race but finished sixth on corrected time.

The race was won by Gerald and Nicholas Copsey, with Gary Ungless improving his sixth finishing position to second.

There was a tie for third place between Alex Tory and Bob Utteridge crewed by Marie Brown.

In the final race, Vincent Christan and Gerald and Nicholas Copsey vied for the lead. Gerald eventually won and retained first place, Bob Utteridge improved from third to second while Vincent was again relegated from second to third place on corrected time.

Vice-Commodore Niall Pearcey thanked all those who attended and presented the Jamie Butcher Memorial Trophy to Gerald and Nicholas Copsey.

The club members were very pleased to accept a seat for the club grounds, presented in memory of Jamie by his parents.

n There will be an Open Meeting for Solos on Saturday with a briefing at 10.30am. The Autumn Handicap Tankard Series continues for the following six Sundays.

Final positions: 1 Gerald and Nicholas Copsey (National 12) 2pts, 2 Vincent Christan (Laser) 4pts, 3 Alex Tory (Solo) 5pts, 4 Bob Utteridge and Marie Brown (Enterprise) 5pts, 5 Gary Ungless (Solo) 6pts, 6 Denis and Anthony Copsey (Enterprise) 9pts.
