RIDGEONS LEAGUE CUP SEMI-FINAL

Soham Town Rangers 0 Ipswich Wanderers 1

SOHAM have the perfect opportunity to make amends for a frustrating night when they play their second semi-final in seven days on Tuesday.

A freak second-minute goal put Ipswich into the final of the Ridgeons League Cup on Tuesday night.

Rangers welcome Wisbech Town to Julius Martin Lane for the Cambs Invitation Cup Semi-Final this Tuesday and Ian Benjamin will be looking to knock out his former club and secure a place in his second final as Soham manager.

Benjamin said: "It was a very frustrating night for us against Ipswich and I was disappointed with the lads in the second half. The effort was there, but we couldn't get the ball to our danger-men. We weren't looking wide for overlapping full-backs, and everything kept getting pumped down the middle where it was so crowded it was like the London Underground."

Lea Jordon replace the cup-tied Sean Greygoose in goal and he could only hook the ball into his own net when a low cross from the right caught a divot.

The well-drilled Wanderers controlled the early stages, employing a holding midfielder to sit in front of Andy Furnell and Charles Libam, effectively starving the Soham forwards of possession.

The alert Jordan raced off his line to avert Dean Tournay-Godfrey when he beat the off-side trap.

Soham created pressure in the last 10 minutes of the half.

Matt Robinson forced a good stop with a 25-yard drive in the 37th minute, Paul Hill had a header tipped over the bar from the resulting corner, before Stuart Williams headed straight at the keeper from 10 yards.

Furnell spurned a chance after a quick Libam free-kick and then had a header tipped over, just before the break.

Soham started the second half brightly but soon became frustrated when Ipswich packed the midfield.

Keke St Hilaire switched to the right wing just after the hour-mark but was desperately under-used.

Soham's best chance came in the 66th minute when Libam played a one-two with Furnell and forced a spectacular double save.

After a series of goalmouth scrambles substitute Tommy Crawford blasted Soham's final effort, from a free-kick, straight at the keeper.

n Soham's next match is away to Dereham Town on Saturday.

Tuesday's semi-final kicks off at 7.45pm.
