HADDENHAM and Ely Amateur Boxing Club will be hosting its first show of the season on Saturday, with dozens of the region's top young boxers on show.
And, for the first time in recent years, the club will host the event at its new home at Ely College, on Downham Road.
The first bout will start at 7.45pm and club coach Mike Sawyer is hoping for a bumper turnout to support the local fighters, who will be pitting their wits against opponents from across the region.
“I think it’s the first time in about 20 years that we have had a boxing show in Ely so we are all looking forward to it,” said Sawyer.
“I will have eight Haddenham and Ely boys boxing on the night as well as some England international fighters and some super heavyweights. I want everyone to come along and support their local boys.”
Tickets for the event cost £10 on the door.
Three of the club’s fighters were in action at the weekend, when they took part in a show at Fairbarn ABC in Essex.
Debutant Alex Lee took on J Francois from the host club but, despite looking polished in the first round, Lee couldn’t reproduce his good form in the later rounds and the bout was stopped.
Another first-time fighter, Callum Gibson, was also in action and narrowly lost out on a majority points decision. Gibson, 11, boxed superbly throughout his fight with Fairbarn’s A Lawrence but the judges awarded the decision to the latter.
Liam Goodjohn took on the host club’s Y Israrullah in one of the showpiece bouts of the evening but the fight was stopped by the referee in the third round after a couple of hefty blows from the home fighter which caught Goodjohn flush.
