WOODBRIDGE put a major dent in Ely City’s championship hopes as Alan Alsop’s men were hit for six.
Despite the match being largely even in the opening 40 minutes, the home side shifted through the gears in the second half and caught Ely napping time and again to record a thumping win.
The dropped points leave Ely in second place in the Ridgeons Premier Division, a point behind leaders Wroxham having played a game more.
Chances were few and far between for both side in the opening half-hour but decent efforts from strike duo Austen Diaper and Richard Gammon kept home keeper Tom Sills honest.
Lee Pacey was pressed into action for the first time after 39 minutes to keeper Tom Trevivian’s shot out but he was powerless to act as the home side stole into the lad after 43 minutes, James Hubbard racing through to score.
Where Ely had been relatively comfortable in the first half, they near capitulated in the second, with Hubbard putting the hosts 2-0 up in the 56th minute with a low shot from 18 yards.
It was 3-0 just two minutes later and matters worsened for the Robins as Diaper saw red for a hefty tackle on Woodbridge’s Ryan Stafford.
The hosts added three more goals in a devastating final 30 minutes for Ely, who will have to pick themselves up again for the visit of Stanway Rovers on Saturday.
