Premier Trophy South, Saturday

MILDENHALL secured their first Premier Trophy bonus point thanks to a rallying finish with three 5-1s in the last three heats as they faced the shock prospect of a home defeat.

The ASL Freight Fen Tigers led by just three points with five heats left when the Wasps stung into action with two heat advantages in heats 11 and 12 to lead 37-34 and eyeing a surprise away win.

But the Tigers' top two, Jason Lyons and Daniel King, rescued the points with maximums in heats 13 and 15, with a Jon Armstrong/James Brundle 5-1 sandwiched in-between, to seal victory and the aggregate bonus point.

There was a lengthy stoppage after a heat two first/second bend collision with Aussie Joel Parsons squeezing out Barry Burchatt and Billy Legg, who were sent tumbling into the fence, and Legg was taken to hospital.

In a nip and tuck affair throughout, the Wasps capitalised on a poor showing from Shaun Tacey and Brundle in heat three to take a 5-1 through Carl Wilkinson and Tony Atkin.

Tacey and Brundle made amends with a 5-1 of their own two heats later and maintained that five-point lead until heat nine when Parsons came from behind to beat Tacey.

The Wasps closed the gap to just a point after Chris Schramm put three lacklustre rides behind him to inflict the only defeat on Daniel King during the evening in heat 11.

The Wilkinson/Parsons partnership in heat 12 worked wonders for the away side by seeing off Tacey for a 5-1 to put Newport three points ahead.

But the Fen Tigers showed the fighting spirit that brought them good results against Isle of Wight and Somerset and at Newport, by reeling off three successive 5-1s and awesome Aussie Jason Lyons securing his first maximum for Mildenhall.

MILDENHALL ACADEMY 55

USA DREAM TEAM 40

Challenge, Saturday

ACADEMY boss Blayne Scroggins was forced to patch up his side before a wheel had even been turned after the late withdrawals of both Andrew Bargh and Danny Norton from the line up.

The Dream Team, having struggled to fit in any practice time since arriving in the UK, were unsurprisingly caught cold as Mildenhall opened with two 5-1s as James Purchase showed great improvement from last season and both Ben Hopwood and Trevor Heath impressed equally in parts.

Matt Wright, returning as a guest replacement for Norton, was a stylish winner of heat three, as was visiting captain Buck Blair in the fourth, with a reminder of some impressive second-half performances around West Row a decade earlier.

Following a scary collision in heat nine, with Mark Baseby locking up on the fourth bend and being hit by the chasing Blair despite his best efforts to lay the bike down with barely any reaction time, the visiting captain dusted himself down to notch a 5-1 in the re-run.

Academy reserve Heath continued his impressive night's work, heading skipper Mark Thompson home for a 5-1 in heat 11 and winning a shared heat 14, with Baseby again an unlucky faller at the back.

n The funeral of Mildenhall Speedway commercial/marketing manager Brian Snowie took place yesterday at St Nicholas Parish Church in North Walsham.
