ELY Tigers 1st XV were knocked out of the EDF Vase as they went down 48-0 away to Lowestoft and Yarmouth.

The eight try defeat for Ely highlighted the gulf in standard between the tops of the Eastern Counties Leagues One and Two as Lowestoft looked comfortable in victory against Paul Coulson's side.

To their credit the Tigers started with every intention of taking the game to their opponents and were unlucky not to find reward from several waves of early attacks launched by their forwards.

Once Lowestoft had re-gained possession however, the pattern of play changed and the home side immediately ran in a try courtesy of Scott Nelson, converted by Russ Chapman.

A Marc Thomas try soon after was once more converted to allow daylight to begin to appear between the two teams. Ely regrouped soon after though, and a better organised defence set about stemming the tide of attacks that had so far crashed through.

Thomas added another score for Lowestoft before the break from a driven maul with Tom Castleton and Chris Howe adding further tries soon after the restart. In the latter stages a demoralised Ely were powerless to resist as Lowestoft rammed home their advantage with Russ Wilkinson and Marc Thomas adding the last of the home sides' eight tries.
