RUGBY ROUND-UP

Greene King Premiere Cup quarter-final

Ely II 17 Woodford IV 12

ELY II entertained Woodford IV in the Greene King Premiere Cup quarter-final with a strong, if not full strength, team.

Woodford conceded a penalty and Matt Daybell kicked it to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Ely pushed the Woodford scrum back to their line before it collapsed and prop Sean Humble had to leave the field with an injured back.

Ely were awarded another five metre scrum from which Dean Brimfield, on for Sean Humble, powered over the line with his first touch of the ball. Matt Daybell converted well from far out and Ely stretched their lead to 10-0.

A promising attack by the Ely backs led to a good rolling kick, to which Daybell won the race, beat two cover defenders with side-steps, then off-loaded to Mark Egerton. He made no mistake and Daybell converted the try that he had created.

Again bad luck struck as scrum-half Vic Cato had to leave after a collision. This caused a major revision as only a prop, Clinton Chivers, remained as a reserve. Almost immediately Woodford scored a converted try.

With 15 minutes to go the Ely side were putting in a huge tackle count but still getting enough ball to get into the Woodford half to relieve pressure. This was nearly their downfall when the backs tried an over-elaborate move which left them with no cover for error. The pass was dropped and bounced nicely for Woodford to run in a 60 metre try, but good covering kept the score in the corner.

Ely Tigers Under-16s 24

West Norfolk Under-16s 42

THE game got off to a bad start for Ely with West Norfolk running in two tries in the first 10 minutes, but the Tigers stuck at it and were rewarded with a try scored by Sean Kennett and converted by Lee Benzie.

The game became very even, with West Norfolk scoring one more try, then Ely pulling back to within two points before half time with tries from both Mitchell and Sean Kennett.

Ely started the second half with a good run of play up the middle of the field but were held up just short of the line.

West Norfolk broke out to score their fourth try but the Tigers replied as they worked to within 10 metres of the opposition line, then moved the ball along the three-quarter line for Craig Rands to run in the Tigers' fourth try with seven minutes to go.

Ely relaxed, allowing West Norfolk to score twice and end 42-24 winners.
