AN ever-growing injury list and player unavailability meant an inexperienced Tigers line-up but they produced a battling performance at Holt.

The home side struck with the first attack to score a converted try but a Kieran Kennett penalty made the score 7-3.

Holt produced a series of drives that resulted in another try that put them 12-3 up.

They continued to threaten the Ely line but the visitors' dogged defence kept the home side out and led to a quick break that resulted in Kennett's second penalty.

Holt continued to put the Tigers' defence under immense pressure throughout the second half but an heroic stand limited the home side to three tries.

Terry Moore, Ely's director of rugby, said: "This was a match we could easily have lost 60-0 and most of the side would not have played at this intensity before.

"Conceding early points was inevitable but the way these Tigers learnt and applied themselves was magnificent. It is a good starting platform for the club."

Ely Tigers II 30pts

Shelford III 14pts

A SOFT try gave Shelford an early lead but the Tigers roared back into the match with a vengeance.

From the re-start, Tigers launched a driving maul that resulted in Jules Thorne going over the line.

Mitch Jones' penalty cut the Shelford lead but the visitors once again seized upon an Ely mistake to score a try that put them 14-8 up.

But the Tigers hit back and Thorne's second try was followed by Graham Matten's score and Koen Chamberlain's conversion to give Ely a 20-14 lead at half-time.

The Tigers dominated the second half and they were rewarded with Lee Benzie's penalty and Mark Egerton's try that gave the home side a good 30-14 win.
