ELY 2nd XV lost out against a bolstered Newmarket Team by 17 points to nil.
With Newmarket's first XV without a game several of the first team turned out for the seconds making the task all the tougher for Ely who battled hard against tough opposition.Ely kicked off the game in aggressive fashion and several early drives saw Newmarket pegged back. Some aggressive ball carrying from the forwards gave Ely the upper hand but they were unable to convert possession to points.Newmarket soaked up the pressure and responded in-kind with some resilient defence and soon had some decent possession of their own. A period of sustained pressure resulted in a try and the score was 5-0 to Newmarket. Ely reacted well to the set-back though, and, continuing with their aggressive forward play, went close on several occasions only to be denied by staunch defence mere metres from the line.In the second half Ely again piled on the pressure but, as in the first-half, their endeavour went unrewarded. In the end Newmarket were too strong and scored another try after 30 minutes and finally a breakaway try right at the death.
