ELY Sailing Club hosted the second round of the Cambridgeshire Youth League on Saturday.

Twenty under-18-year-olds' competed in three handicap races.

Their best two results counted towards their final score. Seventeen-year-old Finn Johnson (Hunts Sailing Club) sailing a Laser won the first two races and finished second to Ollie Mair (17) from Ely, also in a Laser, in the final race.

This made Finn Johnson the overall winner with two points, and Ollie Mair second with five points.

Third, sailing an Optimist was Gabriel Clarke from Hunts Sailing Club with five points, he also won the first under-15's prize.

The under-12's prize went to Finn Conroy of the Cam Sailing Club also in an Optimist who finished eighth overall.

The first girls' prize went to Rosie Bain in a Topper (Hunts Sailing Club) who finished sixth overall.

The youngest competitor on the day was 10-year-old Adam Williams from the Cam Club.

On Sunday the busiest person at the club was Alan White, the rescue officer.

The moderate to strong gusty south westerly wind caused many capsizes and fill ups which lead to retirements.

In the First Handicap race there were nine starters but only three finishers.

During the race there were nine capsizes and one fill up.

Eric Christan (Comet) beat Gary Ungless (Solo) by six seconds on corrected time and John Cant in a Laser Radial finished third.

In the Second Handicap race there were six starters and again only three finishers with 17 capsizes during the race.

This time Alex Tory in his Solo stayed upright and won by more than five minutes from Eric Christan and John Cant.

The three-boat Solo Class race was well contested with Alex Tory the winner and Alayne Seymour in a borrowed boat losing her second place at the penultimate mark to Gary Ungless.
