SOHAM Town have unveiled three new players this week as manager Ian Benjamin guns for Ridgeons Premier glory next season.

Attacking midfielder Darren Jimson, 26, has signed for Soham from Wisbech Town and Benjamin is delighted by the acquisition.

He said: "He is a very good player and I am thrilled to have him at the club. He played in midfield for Wisbech but I see him in a more advanced role at Soham.

"He is capable of scoring 20 goals a season, but he is also very creative and that is something that we have lacked in the team.

"Darren is loyal to the clubs he plays for and we had to work hard to get him but I think it will be a good move for him."

Benjamin added: "He has already fitted in well and made a good impression with the other players."

And the Soham boss has also signed goalkeeper Ian Pledger and 18-year-old defender Jamie Langley.

Benjamin said: "Ian is an experienced keeper who will improve our back line and Jamie has lots of potential. I fully expect him to push for a first team place."

But Benjamin has not ruled out strengthening the squad further. He said: "I never say never and if the right player becomes available then we will consider bringing him to the club."

Soham's pre-season friendly against St Neots, scheduled for July 24, is likely to be called off after the two teams were drawn against each other in both the FA Cup and FA Vase.

# MILDENHALL Town played their first pre-season friendly on Saturday and manager Trevor Munns was encouraged by his team's performance.

Town lost 3-0 to Cambridge United at Recreation Way but the home side held their own until Lee Boylan, on his United debut, opened the scoring on 54 minutes.

Boylan's second and Andy Hughes' goal both came within four minutes of the final whistle.

Munns said: "It remained goalless for almost an hour and, considering that we both fielded our first teams, I was very pleased.

"We defended really well and Dave Werthman looked impressive alongside Andy Eady at the back.

"We were missing a couple of players and, as expected, we faced pressure but we also created a couple of chances."

There was more good news for Munns off the pitch. The attendance of 435 was welcomed by the Town boss, who said: "That news is just as important for the club and I hope that we continue to get good crowds for the other friendly matches."

The Mildenhall squad has been bolstered by the signing of a third former Newmarket player in as many weeks.

Midfielder Stuart Abbs' move from the Jockeys was welcomed by Munns. He said: "He was injured for most of last season but if he can get back to full fitness, he has a lot of potential."

Like Benjamin at Soham, Munns is still open-minded about more signings. Munns said: "I think we need one more central midfielder. We are a little short of options in that department."

Town continue their pre-season friendly programme with the home match against King's Lynn on Saturday. The home friendly against Bury has been moved from Friday, July 20, to Thursday, July 19 (7.45pm).
