CITY of Ely's Year Nine rugby team crowned a successful season by winning the Cambridgeshire County Schools tournament at Wisbech.

The team have a 100 per cent record this year and continued this remarkable feat throughout the five-game competition.

They had impressive victories against teams from Cromwell Community College, Neale-Wade Community College and local rivals Witchford Village College.

The hardest test came against the tournament favourites, Wisbech Grammer School.

In a close-fought match, Ely scored three tries through their fast running backs and, with some determined tackling from their powerful forwards, restricted Wisbech to just two tries in reply.

Nick Foulkes, Head of PE at Ely College, said: "It was an excellent performance from one of the most talented teams at the college, and a well deserved success for all the hard work the boys have put into the practice and training."

The City of Ely squad: Joe Coyle (Joint Captain), Val Agafanov (Joint Captain), Nedas Bartius, Sam Goodge, Zeke Stevens, Daniel Mathie, Richard Le-Surf, Jamie Clarke, Will Banister, Alex Bettison, Kevin Collier, Hayden Palmer, Jonathon Hucker, Daniel Hines, Hayden Shipp, Scott Turner, Adam Newson, Carl Downham, Ashley Fox, Nathen McCarthy, Danny Youngman.
