Travelling without 15 of their recent squad, the Tigers held on to claim a useful win.

Full-back Kieran Kennett made his league debut, and Jamie Russell made a start at scrum-half, which meant that a much lighter pack faced Southwold's heavy pack.

Ely took the lead after three minutes when - with the wind behind - Sam Sanders-Hewett dummied and broke for the line before off-loading the ball to Kennett. Ed Fahy converted the try to put the visitors 7-0 ahead.

Fahy's penalty increased the Tigers' lead to 10-0, but a blind-side try enabled Southwold to halve the deficit and a penalty closed the gap to just two points as Ely began to make elementary mistakes under pressure.

Just when the tide seemed to be turning against them, Ely won a line-out 15 metres from the Southwold line and executed a great roll and drive, with Mark Mitzman scoring to make it 15-8.

An early second half penalty brought the hosts closer, but their brutal approach yielded no further reward as they missed a string of penalties.

Jason Andrews made his second team debut at hooker as Ely entertained league leaders Shelford on Saturday.

A Shelford front row player was injured during the opening exchanges, and with no front row replacement there were uncontested scrums for 70 minutes.

Richard Nelson's try was cancelled out by Shelford following a five-metre scrum, and a subsequent penalty handed the visitors an 8-5 lead.

Nelson grabbed his second try after a rolling maul however, and when Shelford had a player consigned to the sin-bin No 8 Jules Thorne scored from the back of a scrum to make it 19-8.

Matt Daybell capitalised on Luke Caldwell's great run to extend Ely's advantage, but a fumbled ball gave Shelford renewed hope.

Ely then had Vic Cato re-located to the sin-bin, but responded with another try as Ian Lemmon picked up the loose ball before releasing prop Sean Humble over the line.
