Young swimmers have enjoyed a wave of success at the county championships in a year which has already seen a run of wins for the City of Ely Swimming Club.

Youngsters competed at the Cambridgeshire ASA County Championships across distances from 50m to 1,500m in Whittlesey, Corby and Cambridge.

The championships culminated at Parkside Pools Cambridge with the team relays.

Overall Ely’s team of 36 swimmers, competing in individual events, finished 4th out of the 10 competing county clubs.

Elaine Hill, head coach, said: “Superb results. So proud of everyone who took part. Our team relay spirit was awesome.”

The avalanche of success includes 16 gold medals, 23 silver medals, nine bronze medals, 46 sprint finalists, 14 new regional times, over 100 personal bests and 34 smashed club records.

Individual successes includes top three placings for Maximilian Veiga, the top boy in the age 11 category, and Daniel Kendall, third in the age 12 category.

Maximilian won nine golds, four silvers, six club records and new regional times whilst Daniel gained two golds, four silvers, a bronze, five club records and more regional times.

County champs also provided major success in the pool for Iona Trainer with three golds, nine silvers, three bronzes, improved regional times and an impressive 15 new club records.

Thomas Alderton gained his first regional time to go with his two silver and one bronze medal.

Other winners were Georgia Holgate with one gold and two silvers, plus a club record, Ben Alderton with one silver and a bronze, Joseph Alsop with bronze, Tia Hill with a bronze, Alex Brewis with a gold, Jake Challenger with a silver (and a club record) and William Haylett with a bronze and a new club record.

The success continued for Jennifer Holland (sprint final), Amelie Hawksley (sprint final), Orla Harrison (three sprint finals), Gina Brewis (two sprint finals already having regional times) and Robert Banwell (sprint final).

Also Jasmine Thompson (three sprint finals and three club records), Kendle Putter (two sprint finals), Daniel Millard (one sprint final) and Lexi Harrison (club record).

Other swimmers qualifying to swim individually for Ely at the county championships were George Sporle, Alex Millard, Olivia Brodie, Inez Trainer, Mia Tandon, Rose Beckman, Lauren Challenger, Harriet Smith, Breanna Kehren, Hannah Turner, Charlotte Nash, Grace Stevenson, Enya Freimanaite, Grace Higgins, Grace Lowther and Sarah Hardiment.

Joining the event for relays were Jessica Hill, Adrian Kwiecien, Sophia Abbot, Dominic Jones, Sasha Ellis, Alan Taylor, Susie Holland and Derrell Jackson helping Ely finish fourth in the relays also.
