A MASTERS Swimmer from City of Ely Swimming Club, who took up the sport in her 50s, broke three East Region records at the recent Inter County Masters competition in Peterborough.

Audrey Head, 74, from Witchford, represented Cambridgeshire and competed against swimmers from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire in the 70-74 age group.

She achieved record times in each of her three individual events over 50 metres: breaststroke (1 min 4.48 sec), freestyle (59.74) and backstroke (1 min 17 sec.)

The competition ranks swimmers against others in their age groups, and in the over-65s group Audrey is now ranked 10th fastest in England for breaststroke.

Head coach at City of Ely Swimming Club, Elaine Hill, said: "Audrey has worked really hard over the last six months and her determination has paid off. She deserves this recognition."

Audrey is the former president of Cambridgeshire Amateur Swimming Association, has represented the county on many occasions, was president and has also swum for Ely Swimming Club - most recently this summer when she won a gold medal when competing against 16 German teams in an Olympic sized swimming pool in Kempen.

Audrey is also a nationally qualified judge and timekeeper, and assists Ely Swimming Club's coach by teaching the younger swimmers.

Chairman of Ely Swimming Club, Paul Hill, said: "We are delighted for Audrey. She is an inspiration to all our swimmers, young and old."

Ely has several Masters swimmers who train with the main squad at the Paradise Pool on Mondays (7.30-9pm), Wednesdays (7-9pm), Thursdays (7-8pm) and Sunday mornings (8-10am). Swimmers of all ages are welcome.
