Sutton rower takes double win at Sudbury International Regatta
A teenager from Sutton won both races at a prestigious British rowing competition.
Matt Allen, who is student at Witchford Village College and sculls for Rob Roy Boat Club in Cambridge, took a double win at Sudbury International Regatta at the weekend.
Matt raced both his own age at J14 and also took on J15, winning the heats and semi’s in both categories on the sweltering hot day, followed by convincing wins in the finals.
He also won the Nibs Rendall Trophy for winning the J15 final.
The Sudbury Regatta takes place on the first Saturday of August each year.
The 650m rowing course is raced upstream from a stake boat start along a course characterised by some challenging bends.
One of the highlights of the regatta is the sprint eights event, racing for hip-flasks along the last and straighter 350m.
The Rob Roy Boat Club is Cambridge city’s most successful non-university town rowing club and their focus is on ‘excellence in small boats’.
Known locally as ‘Robs’ they cater for everybody – from complete beginner to masters, from juniors to seniors, up to international rowers and scullers.
