MEMBERS of Ely Tri Club had a run of good results at two of the East region’s major triathlon events at the weekend.

Great Yarmouth’s Fritton Lakes hosted its annual Triathlon Festival from Saturday and Giles Thurston entered the super sprint race, placing well for his first race featuring an open water lake swim.

Giles completed the swim, bike and run sections in 52 mins and 46 secs securing him first place in his age category (35-39) and a highly creditable seventh overall.

Three Ely athletes entered the following day’s longer Olympic distance race. Pete Foody and Graham Chapman both took wins in their age categories; Pete (45 – 49 age group) completed the course in a little more than 2 hrs and 13 mins - bagging a superb seventh place overall - and Graham (55 -59 age group) in a little more than 2 hrs and 27 mins. Chris Fulford came just behind Graham in an impressive 2 hrs and 31 mins, taking 17th place in the highly competitive 35-39 age group.

The weekend also saw two Ely Tri Club athletes compete in the Great East swim. Despite choppy conditions, Tonia Schofield clocked an impressive time of 1 hr 6 mins - finishing seventh in her age group - in the two mile swim and Joe Robbins a highly creditable 30mins 1sec in the one-mile event.
