FOLLOWING his gold medal at the Eastern Region Disability Athletics Championships, Ely athlete Stuart Mitchell is now setting his sights on raising money for charity.

Stuart, 15, will be joined by his father Keith in the British 10K London run on Sunday, and all money raised will be donated to the Prader Willi Association.

Stuart has the rare genetic condition Prader Willi Syndrome (PWS) and he will be the first sufferer to run in the event.

PWS is associated with a lifelong struggle with weight, as sufferers have no sensation of being full. Along with this are various behavioural problems, learning difficulties, and often curvature of the spine and poor muscle tone.

Stuart has always been encouraged to take part in sports, especially swimming, which has kept him fit and healthy.

After having surgery for scoliosis 18 months ago, he decided to follow his father and train with Ely Runners last summer.

Since then he has made fantastic progress and is aiming for a time of about 68 minutes for the 10K run.

The Prader Willi Association provides awareness, understanding and support for people with PWS and their families and professionals working with this rare and life-threatening genetic condition.

Anyone wishing to sponsor Stuart should contact the Prader Willi Association, 125a London Road, Derby DE1 2QQ or donate online at www.justgiving.com/ stuartpws
