CITY of Ely Sailing Club starlets Jack Knight and Holly Wells impressed at the club's Open Meeting at the weekend as they picked up impressive top three finishes amongst stiff competition.

Knight, who was crewing for Hunts' SC's Graham Kirkup, and Wells, who was crewing for Dad John, both raced well to finish third and second respectively, beating off competition from 10 other crews.

There were six visiting boats joining the four Ely boats in an exciting day's racing on Roswell Pitts. The Ely fleet was reduced because of the blustery conditions and because some home boats were still being fitted out after their winter maintenance.

The first race started in a strong breeze which made for exhilarating planing on the reaches and slightly scary conditions when running before the wind.

The first two races were won by Brian and Linda Cumming from Dabchicks Sailing Club on Mersea Island, who made the most of the gusts and wind shifts to lead by a considerable distance.

The third race was won by Ely crew John and Molly Wells who had to reclaim their lead several times during a closely fought race.
