TWENTY riders made it to Ely and District Cycling Club's Tuesday evening event last week for superb racing in glorious conditions.
They included one of Britain's top triallists, Ian Cammish (Sonic Cycles).
He teamed up with Hugo Hocknell (Anglia Sport) to ride the 25 miles together for a blistering 55:19.
Close behind were the powerful tandem duo of Colin and Celia Whitechurch, who stormed over the Witchford-Chatteris course for a superb 59:20.
New rider Tom Sykes really showed his mettle with 1:01:09 for a third spot behind Dan Staite (56:33) and Andy Clewley (1:00:05) while Ely's Geoff Brewster continued his good season with a 1:02:06.
Andy Clarke still managed to compete with a 1:04:37 after completing 100 miles of mountain racing over the weekend during the National Polka Dot challenge.
Together with Cliff Loveday, both Ely riders represented their club honourably over the tortuous Peak District course which features such notable climbs as Snake Pass and Winnats Pass.
Clarke completed the race in 6 hours 11 minutes while Loveday followed just 17 minutes behind.
Powerhouse David Block continued his rise in form recording an excellent and well earned 1:10:00, while another rising star Richard Winrow flew over the line for a 1:08:43.
A welcome return saw Malcolm Robinson, of City Cycles, manage a strong 1:11:23.
Other riders chose to complete the 10-mile option, of whom Andy Bright turned the faster pedal with 24:37 with John Jermy, Ray Jolly and Ray Legg all racing very much on a par.
Talented young ace Harvey Leadbeater deserved praise for a determined and spirited ride with 30:35.
The next event for the club will be on Tuesday for the 10-mile Handicap Cup from Witchford to Sutton and back.
Riders should meet at the Witchford Pavilion on BedWell Hey Lane, Witchford at least 15 minutes before the official start time of 7.30pm.
