A SOLID batting performance from Little Downham helped them wrap up a telling 159-run win over Sutton on Saturday.

Scoring big runs has been a definite feature of Downham’s game this season and so it proved again at the weekend as they cruised past the magic 200-mark to put pressure on the Sutton line-up before a ball was bowled.

P Baker posted a useful 46 at the top of the order for Downham as they opened the batting, with J White and P Cornwell providing capable support.

A decent start was re-enforced by duo D Cutforth (22) and Ryan Duffield (61) who batted patiently to push the scoring on to 207 at the close of the innings. Glenn Campbell picked up 4-43 in an excellent effort for Sutton, and his restrictive work was aided by Ryan Bowles who chipped in with 3-39 in a busy nine-over spell.

Requiring a little more than five-an-over for the win, Sutton could ill afford an over without runs and fielding a depleted team made their task all the harder.

P Robinson (15) and Robert Braybrooke (11) battled gamely to try and hold Downham at bay but some relentless work from White with the ball (3-10) and Baker (2-12) saw Sutton bowled out for just 48 inside 20 overs.

The win moves Little Downham up into fifth place in CCA Division 2A with an outside chance of promotion still on the cards if results go their way between now and the end of the season in little more than a month’s time.

Sutton meanwhile, will need to start picking up a few wins if they are to move out of eighth position and away from the drop zone in the coming weeks.
