SOHAM Town Under 18s swept to the top of the Ridgeons League North after battling their way to a 3-0 win at Fakenham.

A fine display between the posts from keeper Jamie Chamerblain coupled with tireless work from the Greens midfield ensured that they secured an important win that sees them move into top spot for the first time this season.

Gavin Stevenson's side got off to the perfect start when Scott Lightfoot headed home at the far post from Jake Fuller's far post corner. Soham could have doubled their lead just two minutes later when Gareth Suttle found himself in on goal, only to fire wide.

As the half progressed Fakenham came back into the game and might have hauled themselves level but for a series of fine saves from Chamberlain in the visiting goal.

Fakenham continued their assault into the second half and almost drew level in the 55th minute when Norton lost of possession close to goal. Fortunately for the former though, Chamberlain was on hand once more to deny the home side with a fine sprawling save.

Keen to relief the building pressure on the Greens defence, Stevenson ordered a defensive reshuffle and, coupled with a change of personnel, restored a degree of order.

Steadily Soham regained control and they knocked the wind from the Fakenham sails when Sheridan Stevens drilled home from just outside the box to double the lead. With a sizeable advantage behind them, Soham began to dominate proceedings and wrapped up the points in the dying minutes when Stevens poked home for his second of the match.

Soham's next match is at Julius Martin Lane this Thursday (March 26) when they entertain Brentwood Town in the semi-finals of the Eastern Junior Cup.
