David Theobald’s second half brace fired Soham Town Rangers to their first win of the season last night.

The Greens, with coach Wayne Goddard in charge for the week while manager Steve Fallon is on holiday, went in to the Ryman Division North clash on the back of an opening day 2-0 loss at Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday.

Against Waltham Abbey, Soham fell behind to Piers Wixon’s 28 minute penalty.

But Goddard’s half time team talk seemed to spark them in to life. In the second half, they were transformed.

Theobald, who joined from Royston this summer, made the difference, scoring twice in four minutes (66 and 69).

Chairman Stuart Hamilton said: “We were a little bit unlucky on Saturday to come away with nothing. We didn;t deserve to win but a point would have been good.

“In the first half against Waltham Abbey, we were a bit nervous. There are so many new players who need to bed together.

“But in the second half we came out fighting - we were much better. It was an extremely performance and good to get back to winning ways in our first home game.”

Hamilton has backed marquee signing Theobald to carry on banging in the goals this season.

He said: “It was good for the new boy to get two goals. In fairness, he could have had a hat trick. I’m sure he will score a few more this season. He is a big guy who with a good jump who will out-power defenders.”

After two games, the Greens are 14th in the league. Up next is a home game on Saturday with Heybridge Swifts, who have lost both their games this season.
