Table Tennis SOHAM managed only a single point as they entertained Elsworth, Neil Abram beating Joe Thorogood in straight sets.

Abram’s win aside, Soham failed to register another score as neither Jay Johnson nor Jon Audus could stop Roger Fensom and Brian Freer scoring maximums to see Elsworth take a 9-1 win.

Maximums from Kieran and Patrick Mohan plus the doubles from the same pair set the seal on Haddenham’s 8-2 victory over Ely.

For Ely, Andrew Maguire and Hugo Brown both beat Liam Mohan but Howard Middleton was unable to get his name on the scoresheet.

Soham Comrades found themselves facing a two-man team when they hosted Fulbourn but nonetheless found they had to fight all the way to secure a 6-4 win. Kevin Gray won his two singles and then the doubles with Mark Lillyman. For Fulbourn, Tracey Sambrook beat both Lillyman and Alan Chambers in four sets and Peters Zivtins beat the same players in five and three respectively.

Division 2 action saw Nigel Bates lead the Fulbourn III challenge against Comrades III with three wins, backed up by one from Peter Xie, who beat Rob Wallis in five.

Xie went down to Kin Choi Chan and Bela Szabo but joined Bates to take the doubles against Wallis and Kin. Tom Hands returned to the fray after a lengthy lay-off but found the opposition uncompromising although he took Wallis to five. The match ended five-all.

Three wins for Martin Logan was the backbone of Soham Comrades IV’s 6-4 victory over Impington and he was well supported by two from Marc Sulman. For Impington, Fred Laband beat Sulman and joined his colleagues Duncan Taylor and Mike Johnston in beating George Wood. Sulman and Wood recovered from 2-1 down to beat Laband and Taylor in the doubles.

Despite taking Steven Jugg to five sets and Brian Mitchell to four, Ellesmere’s David Wiseman failed to score against Countess but his colleagues, Joanne Pettitt and Aldo Galea cleared the rest of the card. Mitchell lost to Pettitt after being two legs ahead and lost in four to Galea but beat Wiseman in four.

In Division 3, Impington II and Soham Comrades V shared the spoils in a 5-5 draw. Comrades’ Mark Coles and Chris Rule scored two each and Lito Jumilla added one more. Impington’s Jeff Catlin gained his usual maximum, daughter Amy beat Jumilla and the two Catlins took the doubles in three sets against Rule and Coles. Ena Catlin didn’t get on the scorecard but took both Jumilla and Rule to four sets. Rob Pownall notched up another three wins for Ely II against Elsworth II but failed to take the doubles with Karen Byford against Sam Mallett and Rich Smart. Elsworth’s Bill Knibbs joined Mallett and Smart in winning two singles each to complete a 7-3 scoreline.

Duncan Gates and Rob Powell scored maximums for Fulbourn VII in their 8-2 success over Comrades VI. Pat Lloyd chipped in with a win but went down in five to both Nick Rule and Syd Rushton.
