Slick City Get Better Of Mildenhall

AN impressive Ely City side proved too good for promotion chasers Mildenhall Town on Tuesday night as they scored a 2-0 victory.

A goal in either half was good enough to secure the win for Denis Lightning's men, who toiled hard to ensure they picked up only their sixth clean sheet this term.

The Robins started much the brighter of the two sides as opponents Mildenhall struggled to adapt to the sodden conditions. After creating several good opportunities early on, Ely took the lead after 10 minutes as Dave Smith collected a half-clearance from the Town keeper to smash home.

The visitors might have levelled two minutes later but for some alert work from Lee Pacey who was quick off his line to deny a visiting striker.

Mildenhall spurned another good opportunities late on in the half as a break from an Ely corner saw three players in on Lee Pacey's goal. A combination of good goalkeeping and wasteful finishing however, ensured Ely's lead remained in tact.

With minutes to spare Town's Kyle Parish, rattled the stanchion with a rasping drive from distance.

Early in the second-half, Ely regrouped and looked a far more solid outfit as they sought to keep the ball on the floor. Younsgter Owen Kessack tested the keeper with a few minutes gone after the ball broke free from a corner.

Fifteen minutes in and Ely doubled their lead, captain Simon Warren taking the plaudits after his shot deflected over the goalkeeper from a Ben Lawrence long throw.

Ely's defence came to the fore in the aftermath of the goal and provided the team with a surety they had lacked in the first-half.

Scott Fielding came within inches of securing the points with 10 minutes to go as his header struck the bar but it proved irrelevant as Mildenhall failed to find the cutting edge needed to force their way back into the game.
