STRUGGLING Ely were edged out by the league leaders in a close game that belied both teams' league positions.

An under-strength Ely started well, comfortably containing the Cambridge attack. Chris Roberts had a good chance to give Ely the lead before the break, but was closed down before he could shoot.

The Ely midfield continued to work immensely hard in an unusually fast-paced game, but as legs began to tire, Cambridge took control.

With seconds to spare a Cambridge attack drew a foul at the edge of the area. A crisp strike towards the back of the goal somehow managed to find a diving Cambridge forward who deflected the ball high, leaving superb Ely stopper Chris Vincett no chance.

Ely captain Julian Palmer said: "It's a shame this new team is only now managing to show its credentials, we matched the top of the league today right up until the last seconds, I couldn't have asked for more.
