ELY Roller Hockey Club's senior squad were celebrating completing a remarkable league and cup double this week after thrashing Colchester, 20-3.
The Ely club's flagship side had already wrapped up the Eastern Counties (EC) Division Three title with sweeping success over the course of the regular season, but they went one better at the weekend with a sinuous display of attacking hockey which saw them clinch the EC Cup to boot.
The match itself began at a frenetic pace, with the charging steeds of Ely's attack opening their tally for the day with just 15 seconds on the clock.
The rapidity of Ely's scoring continued at an irresistible pace thereafter and eventually proved too much for Colchester who could do little but yield to the superiority of the visiting attack, as Ely sealed the win at a canter.
News of the under 11 team's exploits in their cup final however, was not as joyous as they lost out to arch-rivals Cambridge, 7-4.
Though Ely got off to a superlative start, taking the lead mere minutes after the match began, signs that they would finally vanquish the league winners were soon extinguished by a dousing of fine attacking play.
Ely rallied late on, to give themselves hope of a comeback, but they were unable to close the gap and Cambridge collected their double.
