Table Tennis Division 1 champions Ely I completed a fine season by coming from behind to beat Fulbourn I.

Fulbourn made a great start, with wins from Martin Spott against Liam Mohan and Christian Mohan, plus one from Andy Merritt over Christian, giving them a 3-1 lead.

But Kieran Mohan was having none of this. After beating Peters Zivtins, he overcame Andy Merritt in the fifth and with Liam beating Peters in five, Ely were back on track. Further resistance came when Merritt beat Liam but Christian and Kieran won a last singles each, both in four close sets, then combined for the doubles to give Ely the match 6-4.

Nathan Stewart scored a maximum for Soham Comrades I in their game against Fulbourn II but they were the only Comrades’ points on the board as Jannek Hauser and Nigel and Danny Bates roared through the remaining matches.

In Division 2, Soham Comrades III took five of the last six matches played to see them home to a 7-3 victory against Fulbourn V.

After Martyn Hagon had beaten Julian Atudosie and Alan Chambers beat Nick Gatherer, Comrades were pulled back to 2-2 through Mark Coles losing to David Lam and Hagon losing to Gatherer. Then came their run of victories, broken only by Lam beating Hagon in four.

Soham Comrades II beat their colleagues, Soham Comrades III, by the 10 points needed to give them the championship. Chris Rule, playing up for the 3’s took all of his games to four sets but the rest of the card showed straight three-set wins.

In Division 3, Soham Comrades VI put their recent short-comings behind them and with a little help were able to complete their league programme with full teams. Regulars Syd Rushton and Edward Garrett-Jones were joined by Peter Diver for the visit to Ellesmere II.

Tom Pizey and David Wiseman set Ellesmere on their way with wins against Rushton and Diver. Garrett-Jones led the way back for Comrades beating Wiseman in five and then Annette Ginn. This was followed by Diver’s win over Pizey. Three more wins for Ginn, Pizey and Wiseman saw Ellesmere lead 5-3, when in a real cliff-hanger, Diver beat Ginn 12-10 in the fifth, leaving the match open. Diver and Garrett-Jones came from 2-1 down against Pizey and Wiseman to take the doubles and save the draw.

For their visit to Ellesmere III, Syd Rushton and Edward Garratt-Jones of Soham Comrades VI welcomed back Geoff Powell after a whole series of misfortunes. Rushton started well, beating Rhys Burton and giving Simon Johnson a good work-out. Garrett-Jones beat Burton and Nathan Johnson, the boys not able to handle Garrett-Jones’ quirky style. Nathan beat a tiring Rushton to add to his win over Powell, also the loser in a close encounter with Burton. In a close doubles, Garrett-Jones and Powell beat Burton and Nathan Johnson 12-10 in the fifth but Ellesmere took the match 6-4.
