TWO 800 metre runners from Ely's King's Junior School won medals at a national athletics competition on Sunday.
On a day where the school record books were rewritten at the National Prep Schools' Championships in Birmingham, Joshua Darley won silver in the under-14's race and, in a personal best time of 2.15.1, he equalled a school record that has stood since 1975.
Oliver Diss took bronze in the under-13 race and set a new school record with a personnel best time of 2.22.9.
Ellie Rains smashed the school record in the under-14's 300 metres with a personal best time of 45.8 and came in fourth place, narrowly missing out on a medal.
Temperatures in the high eighties affected the form of many of the young athletes and King's fourth national qualifier, Jamie Myers, had to be content with 12th place in the under-14 high jump. This was a huge disappointment for Myers who, in the regional qualifying event in Bedford on June 15, came second with a one metre 50 centre metre jump.
Coach Richard Powell said: "There were more than 1,100 entries from 48 schools in the regional qualifying event, so we were very proud to have four national qualifiers, and to bring back two medals from the 'nationals' is a great achievement.
